Doctors at the C.S. Mot Children’s Hospital 3D-Printed 100 tiny tubes and laser-stitched them together over a 20-month old baby boy’s trachea. The boy suffered from a severe version of tracheobronchomalacia, causing his bronchus to collapse. The material used for the airway will dissolve into the body in two to three years, which is the amount of time it takes for the trachea to remodel and grow into a healthy state.

A new study from the Global Strategy Groupshows that corporations who appear to stay out of divisive political issues have better brand favorability. The study finds that Americans have clear reservations about corporations straying too far into political issues — especially cultural war issues.

In the survey, 56 percent of Americans thought it was inappropriate for companies to take a stance on political issues that do not pertain to business while less than one-third of those surveyed believe that companies should stake out positions on gay marriage or abortion. The survey also found that companies that are perceived as strongly partisan have lower brand favorability

Now might be the time to admit it: You have a data problem. You’re surrounded by it. It’s flooded your desk, overwhelmed your hard drive and is piling up like floor-to-ceiling garbage in your consciousness. And you’re afraid to throw any of it away. “What if I need it one day? I invested in it, so it has to be worth keeping, right?” You’ve ended up in this cluttered mess, surrounded by information when all you really wanted is to be surrounded by answers.

You’re a data hoarder. But you are not alone and help is out there.

How can a design firm and a non-profit focusing on government transparency come together and make data look cool? The Sunlight Foundation and designers from IDEO teamed up to create Sitegeist, an app using location-based data to help you understand where you are.

Take a 3D printer, waste plastic, four brilliant minds and the charity Water for Humans and you have one very interesting project indeed.

WOOF (Washington Open Object Fabricators) won the 3D4D Challenge back in October for their design that will take waste plastic out of landfills, break it down and, using a 3D printer, turn it into composting toilets and rainwater harvesting systems for the developing world. Talk about two birds, one stone.

At this writing, Gallup also reports that nearly 60 percent all Americans today feel happy without a lot of stress or worry. On the other hand, according to the Center for Disease Control, about 4 out of 10 Americans have not discovered a satisfying life purpose. Forty percent either do not think their lives have a clear sense of purpose or are neutral about whether their lives have purpose. Nearly a quarter of Americans feel neutral or do not have a strong sense of what makes their lives meaningful. Research has shown that having purpose and meaning in life increases overall well-being and life satisfaction, improves mental and physical health, enhances resiliency, enhances self-esteem, and decreases the chances of depression. On top of that, the single-minded pursuit of happiness is ironically leaving people less happy, according to recent research. ‘It is the very pursuit of happiness,’ Frankl knew, ‘that thwarts happiness.’

…Meaning is not only about transcending the self, but also about transcending the present moment — which is perhaps the most important finding of the study, according to the researchers. While happiness is an emotion felt in the here and now, it ultimately fades away, just as all emotions do; positive affect and feelings of pleasure are fleeting. The amount of time people report feeling good or bad correlates with happiness but not at all with meaning.

Meaning, on the other hand, is enduring.
”

- The Atlantic: There’s More to Life Than Being Happy (via wearethedigitalkids)
